Advice on Fitting & Troubleshooting

BSR ROLLER SHUTTERS (balanced spring roller)
-Problem
-Solution
Counterbalance Springs Apparently Not Working
1. To check the springs, take the shutter out of the cabinet. Rotate the spindle in any direction. In one direction the spindle should free-wheel like a bicycle. In the other direction there should be a resistance against the springs. This confirms the springs are working. Refit the shutter, following the instructions carefully. In the very unlikely case that the spindle free-wheels in both directions, then the springs are faulty and need replacing.

2. For top-loading brackets, check that the flats on the end-caps have fully dropped down into the horseshoe brackets. Otherwise the spindle will just spin and not wind.

Shutter Slowly Drops Down After Fitting
(i.e. "Undersprung" Condition)
1. Has the "half-turn" been applied to the rolled shutter during fitting? This is vital because it sets the springs. Take the shutter out and refit it, following the instructions carefully.

2. Has a heavy component (slambar, lock, handle, extra slats) been added since the design was agreed? This can usually be corrected by giving the rolled shutter an extra "turn" (i.e. 360 degree rotation) during fitting, before the shutter is fed down the track.
Shutter Slowly Moves Up After Fitting
(i.e. "Oversprung" Condition)
1. Has an extra "turn" been added before feeding the shutter down the track? Only a "half-turn" is necessary to set the springs. Remove the shutter and refit, following the instructions carefully.

2. Has the design changed in any way to lighten the shutter (e.g. slat removal)? There is no correction for this, apart from replacing the removed slats. It is not possible to take "turns" off.
Rolled Shutter is "Baggy" When the Shutter is Opened/Closed
1. This is usually a sign of incorrect fitting. The rolled shutter must be tightly rolled when being fitted. The springs will sometimes take up the slack if the shutter is fully closed and opened a few times.

2. Failing this, take the shutter out, roll it tightly and refit it, maintaining the roll tightness either by using adhesive tape (not on foiled slats), an elastic band, or for small shutters holding it tightly in the hand.
Shutter is Stiff to Operate
1. Apply petroleum jelly (provided in kitchen kits – otherwise use household Vaseline) to the tracks.

2. For "push-on" bottom slamrails, ensure the handle is not overlength, pressing up hard against the track tops. If it is, remove handle and cut it down so that there is a 1mm gap between the end of the handle and the top of the track both sides.

3. Ensure the cabinet is not out of square or underwidth. Check it and correct it.
